Imagine yourself high in the Peruvian Andes standing on the edge of ancient civilization. Clouds swirl around you as stand in awe of the Incan fortress city that lay hidden for hundreds of years. The landscape is extreme. Vertical slopes draped in emerald jungle are all around. The scene takes your breath away as you can hardly take it all in. This is Machu Picchu. One of the true wonders of the world, buried deep in the Andes Mountains of Peru, and absolutely filled with awe, mystery, and much to learn about the one, true God.
Friends and future students, we are excited to announce that we will be leading a teaching and adventure tour to Machu Picchu tour as an optional part of our upcoming fall semester!
We will be joined by creation scientist, Doug Bennett, as he helps us unlock the mysteries of Machu Picchu’s architectural and civil engineering genius by pointing us back to some very interesting observations from the Bible. For more on Doug, see his Bio below.
We will enjoy the mountain city of Cusco, explore the Incan sights all around, take a train up the beautiful mountain leading to Machu Picchu, hike the summit of Huayna Picchu, see the famed Incan Trail, and much more! All the while relating it back the book of beginnings, Genesis, and God’s amazing creation.
This trip is meant to be enriching, exciting, and adventurous as explore one of the true wonders of the World all through the lens of creation and the Word of God.
We can’t wait to get started!
Fun Facts about Machu Picchu
While many credit Hiram Bingham with rediscovering of Machu Picchu in 1911, the truth is that missionary Thomas Paine first found the site in 1906. Paine was visited by Bingham in 1910 in Urco, and kindly outfitted Bingham with what would be necessary to find Machu Picchu. Bingham never mentioned Paine, but only credited “local rumors” with aiding his new discovery.
Paine chose not to correct Bingham’s “oversight," but was content to continue his ministry to the Peruvians he loved so much without the recognition of man. We can all thank Paine and Bingham as we embark on our journey to discover the lost city of the Incas.
Pachacutic ruled as king of South America’s incredible Inca civilization from AD 1438-1471. He was considered by many to be their greatest king, and to have brought the Incas to their greatest priority.
It was no secret that the ancient Incas worshipped the sun, and deified the sun into their sun-god Inti. Yet, through the beautiful psalms left behind by Pachacutic we find something very interesting. Pachacutic has seen the limitations of a god that could be blocked out by a mere a cloud, and came to the realization that Into could not be the true God.
Pachacutic looked backed to the past and found reference to Viracocha, the omnipotent Creator of all things. Pachacutic’s father had encountered Viracocha, and had been reminded that He alone was God, the creator of all things. Pachacutic decided that his father had not taken the discovery of the Creator God far enough, and as his son, he would.
Pachacutic decided that an all-powerful, creator God deserved to be worshipped. Pachacutic would reveal the limitations of Into and demote him to a mere “kinsmen” or created being. He then rekindled the memories of Viracocha by listing His awesome attributes. Listen Pachacutic’s description as summarized by BC Brundage of the University of Oklahoma:
“He is ancient, remote, supreme, and uncreated. Nor does he need the gross satisfaction of a consort. He manifests himself as a trinity when he wishes, … otherwise only heavenly warriors and archangels surround his loneliness. He created all peoples by his “word” [shades of Heraclitus, Plato, Philo and the apostle John!], as well as huacas [spirits]. He is man’s Fortunes, ordaining his years and nourishing him. He is indeed the very principle of life, for he warms the flow through his created son, Punchao [the sun disk, which was somehow distinct from Inti] He is bringer of peace and an orderer. He is in his own being blessed and has pity on men’s wretchedness. He alone judges and absolves them and enables them to combat their evil tendencies.”
The story goes on, and we would encourage everyone to read Don Richardson’s book, Eternity in their Hearts, where much of this information was gathered or quoted.
The truly remarkable thing is that God has long been working in the Incan people and at the sight of Machu Picchu in order to reveal Himself, the one true God, to people He loves.
How exciting that we get to go rediscover the mystery of Machu Picchu!
About Doug Bennett:
Doug Bennett was raised on a farm in southern Idaho and currently lives in Boise, ID with his wife, 5 children and 6 grandkids. He attended Boise State University where he received undergraduate degrees in Geology and Earth Science Education. He also received a Master’s Degree in Engineering Geology in 1996. Mr. Bennett has worked in precious metals exploration for about 10 years. For the last 24 years, he has been employed as an engineering geologist in the Pacific Northwest region. He is a Licensed Professional Geologist and has been a member of the National Association of Engineering Geologists. He has spoken nationally and internationally in the engineering geology field.
Mr. Bennett was an Adjunct Professor at George Fox University at the Boise Satellite Facility; where he taught general geology classes.
Mr. Bennett teaches classes in Creation/Evolution at his home church (Calvary Chapel) in Boise, where he has attended for the last 30 years. He also speaks at schools and churches regionally and internationally on the topics of origins, rocks, fossils and dinosaurs.
He is the Executive Director for the Northwest Science Museum (NWSM). NWSM is natural history museum whose vision is to present "Natural History" from both a naturalistic and a Biblical point of view. The Museum is devoted to understanding and explaining origins, history and our present world as revealed by scientific discovery interpreted through the worldview of Biblical truth.
He is on the Board of Directors of Foundations In Genesis of Idaho (FIGI) whose goal is to support the church in fulfilling the great commission. FIGI is a Christian fellowship of scientists and lay people devoted to understanding and explaining origins, history, and our present world as revealed by scientific discovery interpreted through the world view of Biblical truth.
